This concert was originally performed in October 2020 to a small, socially distanced student audience and online to the wider University of Nottingham student community.
It is presented 'as live' and will be available to book and view until midnight on Sunday 13 December.
At 30, Shanghai-born pianist Ji Liu has performed on concert platforms worldwide, produced five classical chart-topping albums and is also a prolific composer and arranger. A regular visitor to Nottingham, Ji Liu’s astonishing technique and warm stage personality has made him a popular performer with audiences.
Ji Liu's programme is heroic both thematically and technically. Beginning with Schubert’s ferociously demanding ‘Wanderer’ Fantasy in C major, so called for the appearance of the opening phrase of Schubert's ‘Der Wanderer’ lied linking each movement. Liszt revered Schubert and arranged many of his lieder including the evocative ‘‘To be sung on the water’, the terrifying ballade of ‘The Erlking’ and the moonlight yearning of a lover in ‘Serenade’. The programme is completed with the fourth of Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes ‘Mazeppa’. Inspired by Lord Byron’s poem, Liszt's Etude captures all the trauma of its Romantic hero, Ivan Mazepa strapped naked to a wild horse as punishment for an affair, suffering as he endures the turbulent journey across Europe.
