Our first concert explores how Midlands music students have adapted to lockdown. The Villiers Quartet performs works composed by East Midlands secondary-school students in response to the pandemic.
These students worked with the Villiers and University of Nottingham composer Elizabeth Kelly via online platforms over the past five months under the umbrella of the ‘VQ Create’ project with support from Arts Council England.
The concert also features music composed and performed by University of Nottingham students and recent graduates after the University moved teaching online in spring 2020.

 Named after Villiers Street in London, the Villiers Quartet (Katie Stillman, violin 1; Tamaki Higashi, violin 2; Carmen Flores, viola; Leo Melvin, cello) encompasses the grand and iconic spirit of the extraordinary music tradition in Britain. Hailed as “Champions of British Music” (The Observer), the Villiers Quartet has developed a reputation as an exceptional interpreter of British composers. The VQ has released acclaimed recordings of works by Elgar, Delius, Peter Racine Fricker, William Sterndale Bennett, and David Matthews. The VQ has been praised for “exquisite ensemble playing” (Seen & Heard International), and their absolute “commitment and virtuosity” (The Sunday Times).

 Created in 2004 by its founder and artistic director, Ben Crick, Skipton Camerata is a professional orchestra based in Skipton, North Yorkshire. In 2005, the orchestra took on the name Skipton Building Society Camerata in recognition of the generous support it continues to receive from its major sponsor, Skipton Building Society. At the invitation of Craven District Council, Camerata has since 2015 been the orchestra-in-residence at the newly refurbished Skipton Town Hall.

Annabel Dersy is a music graduate from the University of Nottingham who studied composition throughout her degree. Being a first study singer, Annabel was drawn to composing for voice. She was able to explore this by writing a song cycle for 8-part choir for her final year Portfolio of Compositions module.

 Tom Hill is a classically trained pianist, saxophonist and music producer from North London with a passion for writing and performing music. Graduating from University of Nottingham in 2020, Tom is currently working on his debut album Virtually OK which he hopes to release in the new year. Tom’s passions include listening and playing modern jazz fusion, which is a key influence in his own compositions.

 Dr Susannah Self ARCM, MPhil Cantab studied composition and singing at The Royal College of Music and Cambridge University. She has just completed her PhD in composition funded by a STREAM scholarship at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Her co-lead-supervisor for the PhD was Dr Elizabeth Kelly. Recent commissions include: Fast: Spitalfields Festival 2020, Wave Form: Royal Birmingham Ballet 2019, Quilt Song: Birmingham Old Rep 2018, SLAP: Birmingham Contemporary Music Group 2018, Freedom Bridge: Birmingham Opera Company 2017, The Butt: Musictheatertage, Vienna 2016, Tardebigge Song Festival 2013, The Boy from Brazil: Tête a Tête, 2012, Heroic Women: Royal Opera House, Garden Venture, 1992. Susannah has also sung as a mezzo soloist in many international opera houses. In particular for Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg, The Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp and Ghent and The Landestheater in Salzburg. She sang Katisha in The Mikado in London’s West End and understudied many roles for The Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Dr Self recently led composition workshops at Nottingham University and she has facilitated music programmes for The Skyros Centre in Greece, The Esalen Institute in California and Dartington Summer School. She now teaches composition at Junior Guildhall and her publisher is Composers Edition. Future plans include making a film of fragments from her opera Artemisia in Venice and a performance/film/installation for dance called The Anatomy of a Woman.
