Curtain Raising Performance curated by Gareth Woodward

A beautiful performance born from an exploration of the black female experience by three black female dancers, supported by a majority black female creative team. Born to exist is the all-female finale of the Born trilogy, a contemporary hip-hop and martial arts-inspired dance reflection of what it is to exist today.

Pushed to their emotional limits, the three dancers put on a physically incredible and emotionally heart-breaking show. Holding your breath at every exertion, every expression of emotion, Born to exist: the woman I know is undeniably human, raw, and beautifully, unpleasantly honest. A performance that is so alluringly uncomfortable to watch, because it is so honest.

With lighting design by Simisola Majekodunmi, original score from Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante and dramaturgy by Peggy Olislaegers, this work provides the ultimate platform for activism. Presented in partnership with Nottdance is back! FABRIC (Dance4 and DanceXchange) is delighted to be partnering with Lakeside Arts to present dance performances as part of the Nottdance Season that will be running across October and November 2022.

Born to Exist encourages conversation, which can be undertaken with the artists themselves in a live Q&A session following the performance.
