“Children born into adverse circumstances often have a secret wish…to be seen, to be heard and most importantly to be found. Find Us captured the essence of what I was trying to convey in writing ‘A Chance in the World’.” – Steve Pemberton
The Crystal Lake community gathered at Lakeside Arts Park at the Dole on Saturday, February 23 to help bring awareness to foster child abuse at the Giving Our Children: “A Chance in the World” event. The evening was held in partnership with A Chance in the World Foundation, along with the support of the McHenry County chapters of Big Brothers Big Sisters and CASA.
With more than 100 attendees, guests enjoyed a meet and greet and book signing by Steve Pemberton, a philanthropist, acclaimed speaker, best-selling author and co-producer of the film about his life, A Chance in the World. Pemberton’s story begins at the age of three when he was placed in an abusive home through the U.S. foster care system. After overcoming an unimaginable childhood, he now serves as the Chief People Officer of Globoforce, a leader in employee recognition and workplace culture, and has held executive positions at corporations including Walgreens and Monster.com. Pemberton was joined by emcees Eric Roberts, an Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated actor and his wife Eliza Roberts, a Hollywood casting director and actress.
WGN Radio’s Kathy Hart facilitated the hour-long “Lakeside Chat” in Lakeside’s ‘the Listening Room’, with Steve Pemberton, Eric and Eliza Roberts, along with special guest, soundtrack composer and guitarist Keaton Simons, who wrote and performed the song Find Us, inspired by the book and film, A Chance in the World.
Siobhan Cottone, executive director of the Lakeside Legacy Foundation, commends the community on their willingness to attend this event and support organizations advocating for the welfare of children in the area. “We had amazing artists come together to not only raise awareness about the broken foster system, they inspired our guests to take action,” says Cottone. “This event was an evening that will be remembered for a long time,” Cottone states.
Additionally, over 90 books were donated to the McHenry chapters BBBS and CASA during the event book drive and more than $10,000 was raised to support the initiatives of these local nonprofits.
