NOTTINGHAMSHIRE HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT RECORDS OFFICE

The Nottinghamshire Historic Environment Records Office (HER) documents historic buildings, archaeological sites, excavations, and discoveries in Nottinghamshire. These records are held in a large database linked to digital mapping which is supported by archival material such as reports, photographs, illustrations, journals and old maps.

These records play a role by informing planning decisions, development control, and land management in Nottinghamshire. It is also an important resource for anyone wishing to conduct research on heritage and history of the area. Researchers, community groups, or anyone interested in knowing more about the historic setting of Nottinghamshire are welcome to get a hold of us to learn more about how we can help.

You can reach us at heritage@nottscc.gov.uk, or 0300 500 8080, and we will be happy to help you with any questions.

Some of the historic environment records can be explored on Heritage Gateway at https://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/gateway/

HIGHLIGHTS OF CURRENT PROJECT

We are currently working on the Miner2Major project. Miner2Major is a five-year Landscape Partnership Scheme (2019-2023), supported by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The legendary Sherwood Forest is a significant and celebrated landscape due to its diverse wildlife, important habitats and rich heritage. The last 200 years have changed the area. It still has quiet places, stunning landscapes, history, wildlife, legend and a sense of belonging, but the great forest and heaths are now just patches in a landscape of industrial heritage.

Miner2Major is a partnership of local authorities, conservation groups and community organisations who have been working in the Sherwood Forest area for many years. This is the latest phase of long-term efforts to restore, explore and celebrate the Forest. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities related to this project, from conducting historic building surveys to landscape management, and we encourage anyone interested in taking part to reach out to us.
