Beethoven Quartet in F minor, Op.95
Haydn Quartet in F, Op.50 No.5
Elgar String Quartet in E minor, Op.83
The Doric String Quartet opens Lakeside’s music season with a classic programme of quartets by Beethoven, Haydn and Elgar.
Firmly established as one of the leading quartets of its generation, the Doric String Quartet receives enthusiastic responses from audiences and critics across the globe. With repertoire ranging from Haydn through to Bartok, Ades and Brett Dean, the Quartet’s schedule takes them to the leading concert halls around the world.
The Doric Quartet consists of Alex Redington- violin, Eva Aronian - violin, Hélène Clément- viola and John Myerscough - cello with Hélène Clément playing a viola by Guissani from 1843, generously on loan from Britten-Pears Arts and previously owned by Frank Bridge and Benjamin Britten.
Haydn's String Quartet Op. 50/5, nicknamed 'The Dream' for the rhapsodic character of its slow movement. Inspired by the atmosphere of the woodlands surrounding his Sussex cottage, Elgar completed his only string quartet in 1918. His wife remarked that the central movement seemed to convey 'captured sunshine' and the spirited finale to the 'galloping of stallions'.
